Developing an Active EL Reading Culture
Primary 1 & 2 EL Morning (AM) Reading Programme
Our P1 & 2 AM Reading Programme seeks to inculcate a love for reading as well as impart the skills of reading in our pupils.
In Nan Hua Primary School, pupils start their journey in reading from Primary 1 and 2. To ensure our pupils pick up the healthy reading habit, we provide age-appropriate books in the classroom as well as a quiet and conducive environment for reading each morning when our pupils arrive in school. To enthuse and motivate our pupils further to read and enjoy reading, we also engage parent volunteers to conduct story-telling sessions for our P1 & 2 pupils in the mornings when our pupils arrive in school.
Reading is one of the best ways to engage our pupils and allow them to gain knowledge about the world. To nurture a strong reading culture the following library activities are conducted every year:
NHPS Great Book Exchange
NHPS Great Book Exchange programme allows book lovers to exchange their used books with one another.
Reading is never compromised in Nan Hua Primary School. Book Buffet is organised at the canteen so that pupils could borrow books during recess. Our librarian set up a mobile ‘library’ in the canteen where pupils browse and borrow books!
Enriching and Engaging our Pupils
News-In-Class (Primary 6)
News-In-Class is a programme conducted for all P6 pupils. Through a series of carefully selected news broadcasts, they are exposed to both local and international current affairs to heighten their awareness of the world around them.
The programme aims to help pupils improve on their oral skills by exposing them to positive examples of presentation skills delivered in standard spoken English. In addition, discussions are carried out to engage pupils.
Literature Programme (Primary 4 & 5)
The study of Literature is the search for meaning, beauty and the understanding of the human condition through texts. Introducing our pupils to the study of Literature is to introduce them to the exploration of universal human ideals and the development of their critical thinking skills in the examination of texts. The Literature programme introduces the appreciation of poetry and simple stories in the Lower Primary before the exploration of children’s novels in the Upper Primary levels.
The Czech novelist Milan Kundera noted, “Every novel says to the reader, ‘Things are not as simple as it seems.’” The classic Roald Dahl novel “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” presents itself as a perfect introduction to the study of Literature at Primary 4, and elements of literature such as characterisation and story development are taught in relation to the book. Beyond the printed text, Primary 4 pupils were able to gain a greater understanding and appreciation of the story through activities such as Readers’ Theatre, Candy Packaging Design and Fractured Tale Creation.
One of the best-loved books of all time is the heart-warming story found in “Charlotte’s Web” by E.B. White. Beyond the intriguing storyline of the book lies a great opportunity to reveal the complexity of its multi-dimensional characters and to probe deeper into the texts to reveal thematic patterns. As such, this book forms the basis of the Literature programme at Primary 5 and the printed text is once again the subject of a comparative study with cinematic adaptations by Hollywood.
Higher English Language and Liberal Arts Society (HELLAS)
The Higher English Language and Liberal Arts Society (HELLAS) is a talent development programme which seeks to lead learners to explore the depth of human knowledge and the complexity of human behaviour, the intricacies of language, especially English, as well as its cultural products such as books, films and plays. The term “Hellas” is drawn from the name of the ancient Greek republic, long considered as the birthplace of Western intellectualism. The contributions of the Greeks in the development of modern society, the arts, language and culture cannot be overstated, with its influence much evident even in our post-modern society. Similarly, this programme adopts the values and virtues of the Hellenistic culture and its focus on intellectual development both in the private and public domain, drawing on the thoughts of its greatest thinkers such as Aristotle and Socrates and its practices such as the passion towards the arts and the pursuit of beauty, freedom and truth.
The programme is offered at the Primary 5 and 6 levels and entry into the society is through a rigourous selection exercise with supporting recommendations by the English Language teachers. Pupils discuss social issues and disciplines ranging from sociology, psychology, to law and government. Specialist teachers, industry experts, and student volunteers are engaged to open the discussions of themes and to mentor the members. The nature of the lessons is conducted through a Socratic approach, and extensive research, investigative writing, and debate by the members of the society is a typical learning artifact from each lesson.
